Advanced Internet Filtering: Keeping Your Computer Safe

The internet is the world’s largest source of information. Some of the material the internet contains is very useful, but a large portion is offensive and inappropriate for viewing. Because this material can be grouped into various categories, sometimes it takes an internet filter that utilizes different techniques to effectively filter out objectionable content.

Internet filters are:

Software programs, that are used to prevent some internet users from accessing unwanted content online, are called filters. They normally block out this undesired content by one of two ways: through using a predetermined list of keywords that are considered unacceptable, or using a filter based on URLs or website addresses that contain unwanted material.

These are the more common techniques but are not the only ones that are used to keep your family safe from what is hiding inside the web. Take the time to read this article so that you can be learn of the new capabilities and features that are now invovled in internet filters.

Dynamic Categorization

Dynamic categorization is the improved version of the keyword filter. Numerous algorithyms get used to figure out if the content on a web page is acceptible or not. It has improved on the keyword filter because it can catch many more bad web pages as well as allow manymore harmless sites that the keyword filter block due to a questionable word.

Image recognition

Filters that possess the image recognition feature offer the advantage of blocking undesired images like photos containing pornography. This type of filter is absent from most computers because it needs a lot more time in comparision to others to properly configure, and it is more complex overal.

Newsgroup Filtering

Newsgroups are as old as the internet itself, but not all are moderated and some contain inappropriate material. For example, you have your conversational groups that often contain sexually explicit language, visual groups that frequently post sexually related images, and extremist groups that are known for promoting racism and hatred.

Without restrictions, children can easily browse through these groups, read messages and even download obscene images. Many advanced filtering programs have the ability to restrict access to specific or all newsgroups and certain users as well.

Program control

Advanced filters can also offer the ability to specify what programs are allowed access to the internet. This capability resembles the basic structure of a two-wall firewall. For example, peer-to-peer applications like Kazaa or limewire can be blocked from accessing the web, yet allow access to your mail client is done by configuring the filter to your desires.

Accessing the internet through the desired programs by certain users is easily done through your filter.

Advanced Features for Enhanced Protection

The internet’s wonderful amount of information is a two-sided coin. With its good comes hidden danger. Some companies have made it their business to protect people from being bombarded with uncalled for content online by creating newer and more advanced technology to accomplish this. Families need to take advantage of the protection offered them through these programs and so they can surf safe.

Mixed Martial Arts For All Ages

March 11th, 2009
by Rab Saris

Everybody was Kung-Fu fighting, and now mixed martial arts (MMA) is growing in popularity. But I feel like singing Carl Douglas’s line “In fact it was a little bit frightening.” Has MMA fighting gone too far? Should we sit and watch it on TV? Should kids be involved?

MMA has sanctioned fights which have resulted in the deaths of Douglas Dedge and Sammy Vasquez. Royce Gracie using Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to pulverize defeated opponents does not come off as good sportsmanship.

This is like a nightmare where every boxer has the personality of Mike Tyson. I suppose if you put mixed martial arts gloves on Tyson he would fit right in.

Bruce Lee is not the originator of MMA. Military training is its proper home. MMA was used in war to kill the enemy. It is called combat rage.

War is the right reason the Special forces are taught MMA. These battlefield skills when brought to the street and MMA events in London or New York are not glorious.

It could be good if your kids get involved in this kind of thing if the thugs of Chicago wanted a piece of your family. If the gun control laws of Illinois spread, it might make this a needed means of defence.

To be healthier, learn self-control, and respect are good reasons to teach your kids in a mixed martial arts academy. The spirit of MMA is where the problem lies.

Blood and gore are the focus of this in demand sport, not the sportsmanship, control or form. Are our kids are looking to see someone hurt?

MMA used for training can be good, but used as competition is mostly very bad. Learning form like boxing, wrestling, karate, or kickboxing is good for kids.

Let them put on their martial arts shoes and uniforms. Tie up their little white belts and give them a workout. Let them go at it with intent to win, but not intent to cripple their opponent.

The strength and skill gained can be used to defend their families or to be furthered by combat martial arts to defend their country. Do you know what I’m talking about Grasshopper?

Police dog remembered

March 7th, 2009

CLINTON - During an elaborate memorial, Ringo the police dog received a final send-off Friday befitting canine aristocracy.

A motorcade of 30 police cruisers rolled slowly beneath a giant American flag stretched between fire department ladder trucks.

A floral arrangement spelling out the dog’s name was put across the windshield of the cruiser in which the Belgian Malinois traveled with his human partner, Anderson County Deputy Rick Coley.

Taps played softly outside the Clinton Community Center, where more than 100 people gathered to pay their respects.

Among the mourners: some 50 law enforcement officers - Clinton police, Anderson, Scott and Campbell County deputies, state troopers and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers.

Police Dog Ringo

A multimedia slide show with pictures of Ringo in action, training and posing with his master or just cavorting, was flashed on the center’s Great Room wall.

Poster-sized photos of Ringo and awards he had won flanked the urn holding Ringo’s cremated remains.

More than one griever dabbed tears with tissues or fingers as Rio Diamond’s song “I Believe” played.

Ringo, described as fun-loving and hard-working, died Feb. 20 of kidney failure.

The highly trained police dog was 10 years old.

Ringo worked from 2001 to 2008 with the Clinton Police Department and finished his career with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department.

“He worked up until his last days,” Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Mark Lucas said.

“Ringo was second to none in his abilities to find illegal drugs or seek out a wanted felon.”

To law enforcement officers, Ringo was one of them.

“The way we feel about it, they (police dogs) are no different from an officer,” said Matt Forsyth, the department’s K-9 unit supervisor and trainer. “They’re one of our partners and another officer.”

Speaker after speaker paid tribute to the centuries-old bond between people and dogs and the selfless dedication and bravery of working K-9s.

“These are not junkyard dogs,” veterinarian Will Roberts said. “These animals communicate with their handlers in a manner allowing fine, precise control of behaviors in a variety of circumstances.”

Without Ringo, Roberts said, Deputy Coley’s job “will be tougher. His back will be less well-covered. His negotiations with criminals missing an important bark.”

By Carl Kanefsky

A 15 year old is behind bars after being linked to an attempted car jacking by a New Castle County Police canine officer.

A man called police Thursday night to report the crime. He said he had just gotten out of his car and was walking to his house in Penn Acres, when two people with guns approached and demanded his keys.

The man refused and when he started banging on the door of his house, the suspects took off.

The police dog was able to pick up a scent, and followed to a nearby home in Wilmington Manor, where police found the boy matching the description of one of the suspects.

Important Points to Consider When You Have a Live In Nanny

March 6th, 2009
by Rashel Dan

For some families, a live in nanny is more suitable. Unfortunately, not all families and live in nannies are happy with their arrangements. Sometimes the mutual happiness of both parties lies in the way you treat your nanny. Here are things to consider when you are about to welcome a live in nanny into your home.

Accommodations

If you plan to have a live in nanny, you should therefore consider that your nanny should have a room of her own. You should also remember that you will have to feed her and possibly offer some other special perks and benefits. Make sure that your budget is able to support another person.

There are those who believe that you can offer your nanny a lower standard living condition than what the rest of your family is enjoying. This is especially if your nanny comes from a third world country where she is likely used to lower grade accommodations. It is important to remember though that nannies are still human beings. Even if they come from third world countries there is no reason why they should be treated less well than nannies from your own country. Nannies may feel strongly about being given a separate set of utensils or eating leftovers on a separate table.

Private Time

The term live in nanny can be quite deceptive. A live in nanny is not a 24/7 nanny. Although live in nannies are much able to respond to short notice emergencies, they too have private lives to lead. Be considerate. Allow your nanny reasonable time off from watching your kids. Make it a point too to respect her privacy during her spare time. As long as you do not suspect anything dangerous, you should not meddle or inquire about your nannys whereabouts.

If your nanny is new to your area, your nanny would be greatly appreciative if you give her the rounds first. Tell her where the shopping areas are and where she can take great pictures to send home to her family. Give her tips on how to enjoy her spare time. Encouraging your nannys enjoyment can help you keep her longer.

Work Specifications

Their duties and responsibilities must be clear. They are not personal messengers, laundry women or cooks. Unless otherwise specified in the contract, do not let your nanny work on other household chores. You may however agree with her to let her do some cooking and cleaning for the kids. Be sure however to clearly specify what kinds of specific tasks you would like your nanny to perform. You should also never overwork your nanny. Just because you are paying her, it doesnt mean that she has to be on her feet 12 hours a day.

Special Arrangements

Your nanny is just like any other regular person. She can get lonely too especially if she is far from home. Do make arrangements for her that will allow her to invite some company at certain times of the week or month. If she does not have any friends then allow her some limited time on the phone to call home. You should also be flexible enough to give your permission if there are special events she may want to attend with other nannies.

Although looking for a nanny is difficult, it is even more so trying to keep a good one. Make sure you treat a good nanny well to increase your chances of keeping her.

Relationships - Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Games

March 4th, 2009
by Lorena Maurer

Wedding rehearsal dinners are a time to relax, calm down and enjoy a quiet evening before the big event the next day. But adding some fun and games into the rehearsal dinner isn’t such a bad idea. It’s a great way to help everyone let off some steam, calm down and enjoy each other. If you’re planning a sit-down formal dinner, fun games and activities can still be on the menu. In fact, if a formal dinner is part of the plans, having some interesting activities on the agenda is not only a good idea, but also an excellent one. There’s been a lot of planning, and a lot of stress and the wedding party and close friends and family will welcome the opportunity to have a little fun.

The success or failure of any games or activities largely depends not just on the planning but your venue. If you’re having a sit-down dinner in a restaurant, try to get a private room. Then a myriad of fun activities can be planned, such as “pin the veil on the bride”, in which blindfolded guests spin around a few times, then try to pin the veil on a picture of the bride. Silly, yes, but also fun.

One fun activity sure to help everyone blow off some steam is charades. Whoever is up will act out a scene from the bride or groom’s life, so it might be when graduating from college, or getting a huge promotion at work. The “it” mortal might choose to act out when the bride tripped and fell at another person’s wedding or when the groom saved a dog from getting hit by a car. This is a little twist on charades that helps people get to know the bride and groom better, and adds intimacy to what is already an intimate event.

If the wedding rehearsal dinner is a bit less formal and held in someone’s home, there are many more activities that can take place. For example, how about a night of playing board games? Who needs formal food? You can have that the next day at the formal wedding. At this rehearsal dinner party, the games are center stage.

Bring in some sandwiches and tell everyone to wear their comfortable clothes and settle in for a night of board games. You can set up games on different tables, divide people into groups of 4 or 5 and have everyone rotate tables at designated times. You can even instruct game players that when they move to another table, the game stays out the way it is. So, for example, papa might begin playing Monopoly where the bride was and he’s stuck with only a little money in the bank and no houses on Boardwalk.

If the wedding is to be held in the summer and the days are long, how about a game of touch football or baseball? You can play bride’s family against groom’s family, men against women, or for a twist, the bride plays with the groom’s family and the groom with the bride’s family. Any combination works. The idea here is to have some fun, relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Other outdoor activities can include anything that is physical and might help people blow off steam. Has the bride been more a “bridezilla” than anything? How about a game of attach where she’s it? Or you can create two bridesmaid’s dress-up trunks. Go to a thrift store, fill the trunks with old prom dresses and large-size shoes, and costume jewelry. Divide the guests into two different teams and have someone sit with a timer. The team who dresses one of the men (ideally, the groom and best man or perhaps the two dads) first wins. Be sure to have a camera at the rehearsal dinner/event, because this is one activity you’ll want to have pictures of!

Moms Getting More Done With Positive Thinking

March 4th, 2009
by Deanna Collins

There are few people found doing more juggling and multi-tasking than most mothers do on a daily basis. Routines and multi-tasting is hard enough on the best of days, but having children always leaves the possibility of that extra complication with the unexpected. Fatigued and worn out moms may take a look at the mountain of laundry and the extra-long to-do this on the fridge and ask themselves what the whole point is.

All busy moms can develop the attitude of positive thinking. We don’t want to look at this as just getting through the day, but to come home knowing your work was done productively and with pleasure. Psychologists and physiologists will be the first to tell you how negative thoughts impact not only on the body, but the mind as well. If you have been working on overload, the simple thought of the pile of laundry still needing to be done can easily make you feel exhausted.

Substitution of Positive Thoughts

A positive attitude concerns your reaction to everything in the midst of your busy days. You have the option of sinking into the sofa and feeling helpless or you can motivate yourself to get going and reap the benefits that action produces. Cultivating a ‘can-do’ attitude can initially be a bit of effort but with practice can become part of your outlook.

Although people may be predisposed to optimism or pessimism, negative thinking is largely a learned phenomenon that can be unlearned. Begin by identifying your patterns of negative and positive thinking. If any of the following examples ring a bell, then that may be something to start working on.

Overlooking the positive: It’s the end of the day and you still haven’t finished that laundry. It’s easy to magnify this out of all proportion, forgetting all the things you have managed to complete during the day.

The blame game: Although you may be at fault for not completing all of your tasks for the day, playing the blame game or berating yourself is not going to help. It will only amplify the negative feelings of failure or inadequacy.

Black and white thinking: If you’re prone to ‘all or nothing’ ways of assessing situations, then you are setting yourself up for negative thoughts. Perfection is rarely attainable.

Cataclysmic thinking: When a person is constantly expecting the worst, or considers a minor setback to be the ‘end-all’ to the entire task or project.

You can obtain positive thinking by taking a step back in order to make realistic assessments of any situation. Keep in mind the most mundane of tasks can be turned into a positive action if you work at it. Think of the pleasure you and your family will get when you have clean clothes to wear, and warmth in your home when it is cold. Replace the thoughts about how boring it is to clean the house with thoughts of less stress and the satisfaction received from having a tidy home. Remember at the same to be grateful to have a home to clean! For so many, that isn’t even an option

Once you partake in positive thinking on a regular basis, not only will you find peace of mind and contentment, but you will be endowed with motivation, energy and efficiency
