Police Dog finds 300lbs of Wacky Weed

February 20th, 2009

Jackie Spencer and Jennifer Robinson are each jailed on one-million-dollar bonds. They were arrested Friday after a police officer spotted their RV following another vehicle too closely on Interstate 40 west of downtown.

While they were stopped, police dog Mario alerted the officer to the presence of a drug odor coming from the vehicle. A subsequent search turned up 313 pounds of pot hidden in the luggage compartment on top of the motor home and a loaded semi-automatic pistol in the closet.

Drug detectives believe the marijuana was on its way to a site in Nashville for local distribution. Spencer and Robinson are each charged with possession of marijuana for distribution and violating the Crooks with Guns law. Their cases are scheduled on tomorrows Jail Docket.

Police dog finds $3,000 worth of methamphetamine in parked car

February 20th, 2009

A police dog sniffed out $3,000 worth of methamphetamine Tuesday when the dog searched a car parked outside a suspected drug dealers apartment, according to investigators.

The drug was allegedly hidden in the trunk of a car owned by the mans girlfriend, who officers arrested at the complex in the 2100 block of Alameda Avenue.

Police declined to release the 41-year-old womans name, saying the Alameda County District Attorneys Office is still reviewing the case and that it remains under investigation.

Officers visited the apartment of 49-year-old Dennis Young following his arrest Monday night on a bench warrant from an earlier narcotics case in which he faces felony charges of possessing a controlled substance and transporting and distributing a controlled substance, police records show.

After interviewing Young, investigators brought in patrol Officer Chad Rech and his dog, Duke, to carry out a probation search of the apartment and Youngs property.

Along with finding about three ounces of methamphetamine in the trunk of his girlfriends 1998 Honda Civic, the dog helped locate about one-quarter of an ounce of methamphetamine under the windshield visor of Youngs 2006 Honda Accord, police said.

A scale and plastic bags were also found in the womans car, said a narcotics officer who asked not to be named.

The couple are suspected of dealing methamphetamine in Alameda and nearby cities, police said.

Fishing From the Fort Desoto Piers

February 20th, 2009
by David Spates

If you are in the Saint Petersburg Florida area then you have probably heard about Fort Desoto park. It is one of the best parks there are in Florida, and maybe even the entire United States. There are many activities that can be done at the park but here I will be talking about the fishing in Fort Desoto Park.

One option of fishing that can be done at the park is by boat, seeing that there are plenty of boat ramps in the park. You can fish the mangroves, under bridges or right off of Eggmont Key, all known to be exceptional for saltwater fishing.

Not everyone has the money to own a boat though, so that is why there are two great fishing piers that are at the park. The fishing piers are called the Gulf Pier and the Bay pier, both of them can offer excellent saltwater fishing all year round.

The Gulf Fishing Pier is the larger of the two piers, and it also has a bait and tackle shop there, the hours vary but for the most part they are open between 10 am and 4 pm. You will see that it is usually always packed with fishermen no matter what time of the day or night it is.

During the day the waters around the Gulf Pier are usually populated with porpoises, which means that bait fish are running. But if you are fishing there some of the fish you can expect to catch are sharks, snook, snapper, grouper, sheepshead, and many other species of saltwater fish.

The other fishing pier that is in the park is called the Bay Fishing Pier, which is slightly smaller than the Gulf Pier. This is where all the tour boats will drop off and load tourist to take them on various types of boat trips that the park offers. None the less it is also an excellent place to catch some fish.

I will usually start fishing at the Gulf Pier if it is during the day and then head over to the Bay Pier at night, as I have had more luck fishing there at night time. You can expect to catch the dame type of fish as you would at the Gulf Pier. The Bay Pier also has a bait shop that is open during the daytime.

The fishing piers are located at the southern most part of the island, and they are open to fishermen 365 days a year, all day and all night. At night they are well illuminated which helps you cast and make rigs, and also will attract schools of fish to the bright spots in the water.

Why Steroids in Sports are prohibited?

February 19th, 2009
by Ashton Taylor

The sporting industry is a million dollar industry, and many athletes go even beyond levels to improve their performance thereby giving their best on the field. This is one rationale behind the increase in the use of steroid in recent times, and explains why the testing prior to an event includes testing for drug and steroid misuse. This averts athletes from using unjust means to increase performance.

“Anabolic Steroids,” is one popular performance boosting steroid, and apart from this several other common brand names for this are Dianabol, Deca Durabolin, and Sustanon.

Anabolic steroids actually work in a similar way as androgenic hormones like testosterone do. as our hormones give us energy and strength, these thus assist weight gain, muscle building, swiftness, and endurance in the sports ground. These types of drugs are very frequently used in sports including weight lifting and field events. Despite their popularity, these are very contentious drugs and scientists are not sure of whether or not they really help boost performance.

Apart from that, athletes that consume these swear by them and insist that their increased performance is due to the steroid use.

One of the reasons behind the disparity in these beliefs is the “placebo effect”. as athletes think that the steroid will facilitate them progress performance, they put in extra effort into their sport and as a result do better. Another reason is that the testing is completed by using much lower amounts of drugs as compared to what is generally consumed by athletes.

These steroids work by means of testosterone which is the hormone that assists male human beings grow through their teenage years and adolescence stages. Testosterone brings about changes in sexual characteristics caused by the androgenic properties, which includes but is not limited to hair growth, penile growth, increased violence, and secondary characteristics like growth in muscle density, growth of bones, etc which is caused by the anabolic properties of testosterone.

Anabolic steroids imitate these changes while trying to bring down the androgenic effects and having just the anabolic properties play a role (thus the name), but this is not entirely possible and this causes harmful side-effects in the athletes who use these steroids.

With the increase in the amount of testosterone, the most prevalent side effect in males is unproductiveness where the body stops generating testosterone on its own to recompense for the amount being taken in through the drugs. These steroids will also cause liver damage, cholesterol build up, and growth of breast tissue in males.

An additional side effect of this is increase in fierceness. In women, the testosterone causes increase in facial hair, changes in the menstrual cycle, and deepening of the voice.

These drugs may be taken orally, via injections, or via creams and gels. Dosages taken by athletes are extremely high, and generally well over one hundred times greater than the suggested dosages.

Usually athletes consume two different kinds of the drug simultaneously to get enhanced results, starting from lesser dosages and increasing these for twelve weeks following which they decrease them back to a lesser level. This is supposed to help the body become use to the drugs.

Disclaimer: The constructive-metabolic steroids information provided above is just for educational and entertainment purposes. This article does not, in any way, condone the unlawful situation and/or use of anabolic steroids intended for purposes other than those approved by the FDA or other legally renowned dogmatic bodies.

by Denise I Smithson

Born in Pequannok, New Jersey in June of 1974, Derek Jeter and his family later moved to Michigan where Jeter played basketball and baseball at his Kalamazoo, Michigan high school. He was chosen by the New York Yankees as the sixth overall first round pick of the 1996 draft.

Jeter soon became established as one of the best players in the American League. He received the Rookie of Year award in his first season with the Yankees. With each passing year, he continued to improve at the plate and he was outstanding as an infielder in his shortstop position. Jeter was the first rookie in 34 years to be given a starting position as a shortstop. Derek Jeter has since become one of modern baseballs most recognized stars.

In 1995, Jeter helped the Yankees defeat the Atlanta Braves while sweeping the World Series. During the 1996 World Series, Derek Jeter had five hits with five runs scored. In 1997, though never making it to the World Series, Jeter batted .291, had 70 RBI’s and 10 homeruns. By the 1998 season, Derek Jeter became a household name. He ended the 1998 season with a .324 batting average, with 19 homeruns, 84 RBI’s and 203 hits. He scored the league high with 127 runs.

In 1999, Jeter became the highest paid player among those with just a few years of service. When Jeter and his agent could not reach an agreement with the Yankees about his new contract, they went to arbitration with the Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner. Jeter won this arbitration and earned a one-year $5 million dollar contract.

Jeter continued to focus on his game. This focus paid off; he ended the 1999 season by breaking most of his personal records. He had 24 home runs, 134 scored runs, 9 triples, 102 RBI’s and a .349 batting average. He was awarded All-Star for the second time.

In game four of the 2000 World Series match between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, Jeter kicked off the game with a home run on the very first pitch. In his second at-bat, Jeter hit a triple and scored, giving the Yankees a comfortable three-run lead. The Yankees went on to win the 2000 World Series in five games.

While Jeter retains his super-stardom on the field, he finds time to contribute to his community. He and his father founded the Turn 2 Foundation. This agency is geared toward high-risk kids and steers them away from drug use. It encourages academic achievement and a healthy lifestyle. Turn 2 operates in his hometown of Kalamazoo and in New York City, where he lives.

Derek Jeter was the first player in history to be named both the World Series MVP and All-Star Game MVP in the same season; he received these awards in 2000. He has been is a seven time American League All-Star.

Buckskin’s Old Western Town

February 19th, 2009
by Ian Kleine

Ever wanted to go back to the Ol’ West and experience what it was like during the time of gun duels, cowboy hats and ‘pretty’ salons? Then visit the frontier town of Buckskin Joe! Where guns and hats rule the arid area, and where the past meets the present, all in one place!

The whole area is themed during the time of the Wild West. You have railways, gun fights, gift shops (okay, so this one ain’t that Wild yet) and a town of terror. The town of terror is probably the most famous of the attractions, bringing in at least most of the visitors into the area.

The railway dubbed the ‘Royal Gorge Scenic Railway’ was created in 1957 by the local Canon City Entrepreneur, for use in the gorge. 50 years thereafter, it still is the most used and most affordable way to travel around the area. The trains run over wooden trestles, with power able to carry at least six cars behind it.

The frontier town itself is one big attraction in itself. Almost any day, at least a few ‘gunfights’ occur, which adds to the authenticity. The buildings aren’t to be shy about either, they have that realism that screams ‘Wild!’ It’s all spirit!

The town boasts it’s specialty when it comes to food. Buffalo burgers! Honestly, one could never say they’ve been here unless they have had a taste of the town’s other ‘red meat’. They really don’t have a big size for the burger’s meat, but the taste is filling and the meat isn’t half-bad. The buffalo may not appeal for most people, so they also have meatless buffalo burgers for the vegans and those who just want a light feeling of what the essence of buffalo is all about.

Burglar subdued by police dog

February 18th, 2009

Authorities took a bite out of crime — literally — on Tuesday when a burglar needed stitches after being subdued by a police dog.

The 19-year-old man was one of two men arrested inside a house in the 400 block of North Volutsia by officers responding to a burglary report.

A woman who was visiting her mother in the 500 block of North Estelle shortly after 9:30 a.m. noticed two strangers go into her home across the street. She called 911, and an officer arrived to see the men leave the house.

They went down the block and crossed over to Volutsia, where the officer saw them climb through a window of a house, police said. More law enforcement officers arrived, including a sheriffs officer with Rommel, a police dog.

The officers went into the house, and when the 19-year-old man refused to surrender Rommel was ordered to subdue him.

The man received several dog bites as he fought with the dog, police said, and he was taken to a local hospital for medical attention prior to being booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.

The other man surrendered uneventfully.

Officers recovered several items stolen from the womans house on Estelle, police said.

How to use bows for hunting

February 18th, 2009
by Rihana Suzanne

If you are an avid deer hunting person then you have three options for killing your prey and that is usually done by either the rifles or the shotguns or the arrow and bow combination. In fact the bow hunting is a tough skill to practice and what that means is that you can get the thrill out of it only after a year or so of practice.

Bow hunting is a challenging as it is more difficult to learn than let us say shooting. You need to invest time in shooting for the bow hunting and then make sure that the arrow and bow that you have the required toughness and the accuracy to be sued in the deer hunting.

Before venturing into actual deer hunting with bow and arrow make sure that you have experimented with carious positions as well as angles. It is these trial and error positions and angles which will give you the required expertise and the best way to get the best suited combination for you as a hunter.

Bow weight is one thing that you need to be careful with. The weight will determine the accuracy of the aims and the shots you will take. For better stabilization there are stabilizers that you can add to the bow.

The bow recoils when you take a shot and what that means is that you will need to have a strap when you release the arrow or else it can damage your shoulder. Use the arrow rest while taking the aim.

The arrows that are used with the bow hunting are the aluminum ones or the carbon ones. The aluminum arrows are heavier but yes they are more stabilized when they hit the trajectory and that means that they can be used for smaller distances whereas the carbon one are lighter and hence can go longer distances as well as they travel faster.

Practice makes the man perfect so practice hard before you venture into the world of bow hunting as well as make sure that you have the required accessories for the hunting.

Having a Baby Ear Thermometer in your home is a must

February 17th, 2009
by Barbara Ellar

There are many different types of Baby ear Thermometers that one can use on a baby however one should always stay clear of a rectal thermometer as this is not advised to be used on a baby, especially since there are many better alternatives. Glass thermometers can also be dangerous when used on a baby.

An extremely popular and relatively cheap thermometer is what is known as a stick thermometer. A stick thermometer has a digital screen along with a long tail which is placed under a child’s armpit for taking a reading. About five years ago a popular thermometer was a strip thermometer, this strip thermometer resembles a photographic negative and this is placed over the child’s for head and then a number will appear indicating the child’s temperature.

In today’s day and age it is not only doctors that can afford infra-red thermometer. The price of infra-red thermometer are relatively low now as compared to what it was five years ago so now most families can possess an accurate infra-red baby ear thermometer.

As a child moves around quite a bit when one is trying to take the temperature the ideal situation is to be able to take the temperature in just a few seconds without them even noticing and an infra-red baby ear Thermometer achieves this.

Apart from being very accurate infra-red thermometers are the best for babies because of the fact that they take the temperature so quickly in fact so quickly that the baby won’t even notice their temperature of being taken, and an accurate measurement is taken in under 2 seconds.

When you place your hand on your child’s forehead or on their back and notice that their body temperature is higher than usual it might be a good time to take an accurate measurement of the temperature. An infra-red baby ear thermometer has the ability to take the temperature of the child’s inner ear, this will provide an accurate measure which confirms parental instinct.

When monitoring the child’s temperature I usually take a reading every 30 minutes or depending on my level of paranoia it could be every 15 minutes. Sometimes I can become a so concerned that I lose track of what they temperature it was when I last took it and I have no idea whether or not it is improving. Many modern baby ear thermometers have a history which is really useful in these cases.

When taking a child’s temperature it is very important to ensure that the device being used is kept clean and hygienic. Some baby ear thermometers come with a sleeve which is goes over the end of the thermometer, this is interchangeable so you can have one for each child.

Protecting Canine Cops

In 2002, Susie Jean was watching a television newscast at her home in Douglasville, Ga. pop. 20,065, when she saw a horrific scene: a fleeing criminal fatally shooting a police dog.

“I had to do something,” says Jean, 51, who was grieving over the recent loss of her two beloved German shepherds.

The next day she contacted her local police department and learned that, like most police departments, it didn’t have money to equip its K-9 counterparts with bullet-resistant vests, which can cost more than $700 apiece. That’s when she decided to raise the money herself.

“I started with donation boxes at pet store counters and veterinary offices,” recalls Jean, who now lives in Socorro, N.M. pop. 8,877.

She then contacted Robert Yurman of Uniform Sales of America, a Georgia-based distributor of ballistic vests for dogs, and explained her plans to donate vests to police departments across the nation. “She was certainly doing a worthwhile venture,” Yurman says, “so we said we’d sell her the vests at our cost to help keep her costs down.”

Within two months Jean had raised enough money to purchase two vests for the Douglasville Police Department. Inspired to increase her fundraising efforts, she started a nonprofit organization called Vest ’N P.D.P. Police Dog Protection, and created the website www.vestnpdp.com to promote the cause. Word of her work spread among police departments, and vest requests began pouring in.

One such request came from David Carleton, 46, a deputy sheriff and dog handler in Forsyth County, N.C. Carleton met his German shepherd Blek while serving in Iraq in 2003. The dog, which specializes in explosives detection, wore a pack that carried Carleton’s ammunition. “I made a deal with him that if he kept me alive, then I’d take care of him when we came back,” Carleton says.

When he and Blek went to work for the sheriff’s department in 2006, a ballistics vest was part of Carleton’s uniform, but not Blek’s. So Carleton called Jean. “She pretty much took care of all the rest,” he says. Five weeks later the dog was parading around in a new Kevlar vest with his name embroidered on the side.
