Retiring police dog corners last man

Var, a police dog on the last night of the job before retirement cornered a teenager sought for investigation of murder, officers said.

A tip led officers to a Spokane house Sunday night, and searching the premises - with the owners permission - Officer Dan Lesser and the dog Var found 19-year-old Michael Summa hiding in the basement.

After a short struggle in which Var was once again instrumental, police said a knife was recovered. Summa was treated for ‘unspecified’ minor injuries from the arrest and was jailed for investigation in the stabbing death of Shannon Cochran, 22.

It was police dog, Var’s last night of duty after 8 years in service. Var is retiring because of medical problems. “Protect and Serve? He undertsood that as only a dog can.”
